
In the next few weeks local people and businesses will be asked what they think of the plans to improve Sloane Square.
The Council has discovered that 3,500 people walk between Slone Square Underground station and the King’s Road every hour, but only about 100 people an hour use the central island. The reason for this is that the island is cut off on all sides by three lanes of traffic. It is little more than a roundabout.
The Council’s plan is to get rid of the roundabout and create two large paved areas and have Sloane Street run between them - in other words turn it into a crossroads.
By making a crossroads, about five tennis courts worth of public space will be liberated for use by families, and young and old people alike. One large paved area will be outside Peter Jones, the other outside the Underground station and the Royal Court Theatre. This new space would have seating and lighting and there would be water features and more trees.
A group of local residents are unhappy with the Council’s plans and have drawn up their own ideas, similar to the current layout. You will be able to comment on both sets of plans by:
